Since July 1st almost 81 Lakhs Aadhaar card has been either deleted or deactivated. With the introduction of the new law from July 1 it has become mandatory to produce your 12 digit Aadhaar number generated by Unique Identification Authority of India while filing your income tax return, as well as applying for new PAN number from the income tax department.
Further, commencement made by the government of India, it is also mandatory to seed your 12 digit Aadhaar number with your 10 digit pan number by 31st August.
But before you can link your Aadhaar with your PAN card you should check and verify whether or not your Aadhaar card is still valid, or it has been deactivated.
Why are the Aadhaar Card deactivated or deleted
The Aadhaar numbers were deactivated for a number of reasons which are stated in Section 27 and 28 of Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations, 2016.
As per the provisions of Sections 27 and 28, a person’s Aadhaar can be cancelled or deactivated if multiple Aadhaars have been issued, or there are discrepancies in the biometric data or supporting documents.
How to see whether your Aadhaar Card is still active or not
Here’s how you can check the status of your Aadhaar:
A tool on the UIDAI website, called ‘Verify Aadhaar Number’, enables service providers and holders of Aadhaar number to verify if their Aadhaar number is valid and is not deactivated.
With the use of this tool, an individual can check if an Aadhaar number is valid or not deactivated, according to the UIDAI portal – uidai.gov.in.
Go to the ‘Verify Aadhaar Number ‘ link on the UIDAI website.
The ‘Verify Aadhaar Number’ tool can also be accessed by visiting the UIDAI website. Once you are on the UIDAI website’s homepage, find the ‘Verify Aadhaar’ link on the right-hand side of the page highlighted in the image below.
Click on the link on UDAI website as shown it will take you to another page.
Once you have clicked on the link ‘Verify Aadhaar’ it will take you to another page. Below is the sample page once you have clicked on the ‘Verify Aadhaar’ link.
Once you have reached this page please enter your 12 digit Aadhaar Number and the captcha to verify whether your Aadhaar card is active or not.
If your Aadhaar card is still active it will generate a green tick mark and show Aadhaar verification complete. Below is the sample image of completed verification.
If your Aadhaar is inactive, you need to visit the nearest enrolment centre along with the supporting documents.
You will be required to fill out the Aadhaar update form and your biometrics will be re-verified and updated. You need to pay a fee of Rs 25 at the enrolment centre for the update. Mentioning a valid mobile number would be mandatory during the process.
Note that children who enrol before the age of 5 years for Aadhaar Card should update their biometrics once after attaining the age of 5 years and then again after attaining 15 years of age. There’s a window of 2 years to carry out this update and failing to do so could lead to deactivation or cancellation of Aadhaar.
