    I have seen many companies having separate accounts payable department. Does it require sound accounting knowledge?

    Employees in accounts payable department are responsible for processing and coding invoices, credit notes and receipts; drafting budgets; reporting on income and expenditure; following up outstanding payments; verifying bank transactions; preparing ledgers; trial balance and financial statements. All these tasks definitely require accounting knowledge. At least an average level knowledge is required to work in this department.
