What are direct taxes?

When it comes to income tax, the liability of payment and the burden of the tax, both lie on the same person. This tax is paid directly by an individual to the imposing entity which in most cases is the government. When it comes to payment of direct tax, it cannot be shifted to another individual or entity. Direct tax can be levied upon property, assets and income etc. The person on whom the tax is levied is liable and responsible for payment of this tax. Such a tax is called direct taxes.
