CBDT stands for Central Board of Direct Taxes. It comprises of the following members- Chairman who is the head of CBDT. Income tax member. Member of revenue. Personnel and vigilance member. Member of investigation. Audit and judicial member. CBDT is responsible for administering the direct taxes levied. It also monitors all the direct tax laws with the help of income tax department. Earlier CBDT also monitored indirect taxes like custom and excise duty but it became too hectic for one board to monitor both the type of taxes. Therefore this unit was split into two namely CBDT and CBEC (Central Board of Excise and Custom duty).
