In case if the individual is holding the assets for more than 36 continuous calendar months prior to transfer then these assets are called long term assets and the revenue generated by the transfer of these assets is known as long term capital gain. These long term capital gains are taxed at the rate of 20 percent. There is only one exception to this rule is in case of securities for which the period of holding before transferring is 12 months to be consider as long term capital assets and so the rate of tax implemented is nil, provided the securities transaction tax has been paid. Any transfer of assets held for less than these periods is considered as short term capital gain. These short term capital gains are taxed at normal rate except securities. For securities the tax rate is 10 percent along with security transaction payment.
