Indian taxation system has given authority only to some authorities to levy taxes. They are Central Government, State Government and even the local Municipalities for certain minor taxes. The Constitution distributes these taxes between Central and the State government and gives authority to them. No other body is allowed to levy any type of tax on anyone. Also, each levied tax is supposed to be backed by a law which either the parliament or state legislature passes.
