I am working with Muthoot Finance. I am living in a rented accommodation. Every month I pay Rs. 8,000 rent and would like to claim HRA exemption. I have given rent receipts to company’s accountant as proof. But he is saying that since rent is more than Rs. 5,000, I need to show rent agreement. Is it necessary?

You need to give landlord’s PAN if the rent is more than Rs. 1 lakh in a year. It is mandatory. But rent agreement is not necessary. There is no such clause. Ask your company’s accountant to show where it is written.
